Apple adquiere la startup de Realidad Aumentada, VRvana

Apple ha adquirido VRvana, una startup canadiense cuyo casco de Realidad Aumentada (AR) y Virtual, Totem, recibió buenas críticas iniciales, a pesar de nunca haberse lanzado al mercado.

Detalles ? El acuerdo se habría producido por 30 millones de dólares y habría sido concretado en agosto de este año, según informa TechCrunch. Apple no ha negado la noticia y muchos de los empleados de Vrvana habrían pasado a trabajar a California. La página de VRvana aún se encuentra arriba, aunque sus redes sociales habrían dejado de actualizarse desde agosto.

Se desconoce qué pasará con los productos que estaba desarrollando la startup, quien ha trabajado previamente con empresas como Valve, Tesla y Audi entre otros. El único producto de ellos que se mostró en público lo es el Totem, un casco o gafas de Realidad Aumentada que también mezclaba tecnologías de Realidad Virtual.

Por qué es importante ? Los rumores sobre el interés de Apple en la Realidad Aumentada siguen creciendo. Se ha dicho en repetidas ocasiones que los chicos de Cupertino se encuentran trabajando en un producto de Realidad Aumentada en forma de gafas, solo que estas serían más parecidas a la gafas comunes y corrientes que a las gafas de AR. Con la llegada de ARKit en iOS 11 y las varias aplicaciones de AR que ya comienzan a llegar al App Store se deja ver cuán importante es esta tecnología para la compañía californiana. Por ahora vemos esta tecnología en el iPhone, pero es difícil imaginar que la empresa no quiera lanzar un nuevo producto que gire en torno a la Realidad Aumentada. Eso sí, para esto habrá que esperar algunos años más.
